EVENTS AT CASTROVILLARI POLLINO CARNIVAL The Pollino Carnival is one of the most interesting and lively events organised in the Province of Cosenza. It has a consolidated tradition and, in fact, was born in 1939 and is linked to the Folklore International Festival. It is a very rich and stirring event that has rightly entered the circuit of national Carnivals. During the celebrations many Italian and foreign groups come to Castrovillari and with their allegoric pageants, parades on horseback, knights, masks, musical bands and various cultural initiatives contribute to a rich and varied spectacle. The Carnival ends with prizegiving for the most original masks and allegoric pageants and a bonfire of King Carnival, accompanied by evocative fireworks. Numerous, lively fancy dress balls are organised in night clubs to close the event in happiness.
CASTROVILLARI Castrovillari, one of the most important cities of the Province of Cosenza, is situated at the foot of the Pollino Mountain massif. Remains of Neolithic age settlements have been found near Cozzo Palumbo to testify that this town was already inhabited at that time. It has preserved its Latin name Castrum Villarum and is still partly surrounded by walls built by the Roman soldiers. The town has an imposing Aragonese Castle with big cylindrical angular towers dating back to 1490 and has several Ancient Buildings built by nobles. On a hill which dominates the town center rises XI century Santa Maria del Castello Church. Rebuilt in the XVI century and often restructured, the cathedral contains superb paintings and remains of medieval frescoes. Attention should also be given to the 1090 Church of S. Giuliano, which has an imposing XVI portal and a museum of sacred art, as well as to the Franciscan Protoconvent. The medieval churches of the Trinity and of St. Joseph are also worthy of note. The Civic Archaeological Museum is extremely interesting and has pre-historic, Greek-Roman and medieval findings. Rich in folklore, the Castrovillari area includes many Albanian centers such as Frascineto, Civita, Lungro and Firmo. The wines and the local cuisine are very famous. POLLINO NATIONAL PARK The Pollino National Park, established in 1990, is one of the largest protected areas of Europe. Divided between Basilicata and Calabria, it includes the mountainous groups of the Pollino and of the Orsomarso and on the slope of the Cosenza Region, it comprises 32 villages. It forms a very rich and scientifically interesting ecosystem and hosts very rare species of plants and animals. The centuries old Loricate Pine, emblem of the Park, the white fir, the almost intact beech woods and the wolf, the roebuck, the otter, the royal eagle and the ibis. The presence of several rivers such as the Lao, the Argentino, and the Raganello, studded with waterfalls and springs, increases interest in the landscape of the Park. In the unbelievable variety of its scenarios visitors may practise several sports from mountain climbing to rafting, from stream walking to cross-country skiing and trekking to caving adventures. The Pollino National Park contains several interesting centers from a historical and archaeological point of view such as Scalea, Papasidero, Mormanno, Laino, Morano, Castrovillari, and Civita as well as important social and cultural communities like the Albanian ones of Frascineto, Lungro and Plataci. Several sanctuaries, for example, the Madonna delle Armi in Cerchiara and convents like Colloreto certainly deserve a visit. The Hotel is located about 9 km from Morano Calabro. MORANO CALABRO Morano Calabro is a picturesque village of the Province of Cosenza situated high up in the River Coscile valley, has a peculiar pyramidal structure with the houses heaped together and clinging to the rock. The favorable geographic position opens the way to one of the most charming corners of Pollino and the village, once II century B.C. a basic halting place on the Via Popilia, can certainly not be disregarded. Morano preserves very ancient remains, dating as far back as the Bronze Age, as witnessed in the Grotto di Donna Marsilia. Dominated by the ruins of the Norman castle, in the nearby Church of SS. Pietro e Paolo, founded in 1007 and then restructured in the XVI century, the village preserves some sculptures by Bernini and in the fifteenth century church of S. Bernardino, which has a magnificent cloister, a beautiful polyptych by Vivarini in 1477. The Baroque Church of the Maddalena, with works of art by Gagini and the ruins of the Colloreto convent founded in 1545 by Bernardo Malizia da Rogliano, is of great artistic interest. The agricultural and dairy Museum, with its rare bygones, really deserves a visit, as do the workshops that maintain an old and refined wood working tradition. The Hotel is located about 22 km from Altomonte. ALTOMONTE Altomonte is an enchanting medieval center, in the heart of the Province of Cosenza, 500 meters above sea level. To the south it dominates the Esaro valley and beyond is the Pollino Massif. Of noble and ancient origins, it was known to the Romans by the name of Balbia and was famous for its excellent Balbino wine. It was called Altomonte in 1343 and successively, it saw an unbelievable artistic development and is now considered an authentic island of fourteenth century art in the very heart of Calabria. In Altomonte one can admire the ruins of the Castle and those of a Norman period Tower, as well as the beautiful Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, a rare example of pure Gothic style in Calabria. Built during the Angevin period by Count Filippo Sangineto, the church still houses his mausoleum. The Museum, which keeps precious masterpieces by Simone Martini, Bernardo Daddi, and Pietro Negroni, is in the nearby Dominican convent, which has a magnificent cloister. The XII century church of San Giacomo, the XV-XVII Sanseverino castle and the seventeenth century Convent of the Minimi Friars, which hosts the Town Hall, are also worthy of attention. Furthermore, Altomonte is a center of well known art and craft traditions and interesting cultural events, being, in fact, the seat of a very active Center for Ancient and Medieval Studies. Since 1988 it boasts a beautiful open Amphitheatre where a very interesting international theatre, dance, music and art festival is held every year. Each year in the summer the famous Festival dei Due Mari, Festival of the Two Seas, is held in Altomonte. Famous names of the Italian and international world of the arts perform in the fields of theatre, dance, music and art. The Hotel is located about 23 km from Cerchiara. CERCHIARA Cerchiara di Calabria is a picturesque centre in Province of Cosenza situated at the foot of Mount Sellaro. The village, 715 metres above sea level, enjoys an enviable geographic position. The historic centre, clinging to a cliff, preserves the beautiful churches of S.Giacomo and S.Pietro. The ruins of a fourteenth-century castle dominate the centre and a short distance away is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Armi from where the view is absolutely breathtaking. Many pilgrims now visit this Byzantine sanctuary, restored in the XV century. The land surrounding the village has a very interesting system of Grottoes, Caverns and Thermal Mineral Waters that have not yet been fully explored and that turn Cerchiara into an authentic haven for cavers throughout the peninsula. The spelaeological archaeological Cessuta Park is extremely interesting. The Hotel is located about 30 km from Sibari. SIBARI Sibari, one of the biggest and oldest cities of the Magna Graecia, was known in the ancient world for its opulence, luxury and elegance of its customs; in 194 BC became the seat of a Latin colony. The archaeological sites where excavation is still carried out, have brought to light significant evidence of the various stages of the life of the city. The most important excavation areas are in Stombi, or Parco dei Tori, Parco dell Cavallo and Casa Bianca. Many of the findings are kept in the National Sybaritide Archaeological Museum. Sibari, a fraction of Cassano allo Ionio, is now a holiday resort in the Province of Cosenza. Its tourist port, called of the Laghi, is very well-known and has room for 900 boats. The Hotel is located about 42 km from Papasidero. PAPASIDERO Papasidero, of Byzantine origins, situated in the hinterland of the Tyrrhenian coast of the Cosenza Region, at the height of Scalea, extends along the charming River Lao valley midst thick chestnut woods. In the famous Grotto del Romito there is some of the oldest evidence to the presence of man in Calabria. The interesting graffito representing a primitive ox dates back to the Upper Palaeolithic period as well as human remains over 10,000 years old. Involved with the presence and by the work of Basilican monks, Papasidero still shows traces of these periods in a monastery near Avena dating back to the X century as well as in a small church situated near the Grotto del Romito. The ruins of the castle and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Costantinopoli with its fourteenth century Byzantine frescoes are also worthy of note. GROTTO DEL ROMITO The Grotto del Romito, which can be reached by a charming road along the River Lao, is a short distance from Papasidero. The grotto is very famous and maintains the graffito of a primitive ox dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic period, one of the first examples of wall painting on the Peninsula. Inside the grotto 10,000 year old human skeletons have been found. One of them is supposed to have been pierced by a stone arrow. The Hotel is located about 75 km from Cosenza. COSENZA Cosenza, main city and most important centre of the province, is situated in the River Crati valley, where the latter flows into the River Busento. Ancient capital of the Bretii, it flourished under the Romans thanks to the Popilia road, strong point of the Imperial road network. In 410 A.D. the Gothic king Alaric, whom legend says is buried in the bed of the River Busento, died in a siege. Dominated by the Swabian Castle that rises on Mount Pancrazio, Cosenza has a V century Cathedral, re-built in the XIII century and inaugurated by Emperor Frederick II who, on that occasion, gave the precious Staurotheque. Rich in beautiful churches and old buildings built by the nobles, it has one of the most beautiful and best-preserved historic centres of the region. A centre of very ancient culture, it was the birthplace of the philosopher Bernardino Telesio and of Aulo Giano Parrasio who in 1501 founded the still existing Academy. Seat of the biggest Calabrian theatre, the Rendano, neo-classic in style, the city is also known for the Palazzo della Provincia, the Civic Museum which exhibits material dating from Prehistoric to Roman times, and several libraries. The new part of the city that extends northwards along the Crati river valley is in constant expansion and is turning Cosenza into one of the most modern and advanced cities of the province.
